Tears of the Theotokos

According to a cherished Orthodox tradition, the Most Holy Theotokos stood at the foot of the Cross of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, sharing in His suffering with a mother's love. As she wept, her tears fell upon the earth. From those tears there sprang a humble grass-like plant that produced distinctive bead-like seeds, which came to be known as "Panagia's Tears" or "Tears of the Theotokos."

Centuries later, a monk on the Holy Mountain of Athos struggled to tie the traditional knots used in Orthodox prayer ropes. Discouraged and unable to complete his work, he prayed fervently for help. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared to him and said:

"My child, take my tears, cultivate them, and make prayer ropes with which men may say the prayer of the heart."

From that time, these unique seeds became associated with prayer and devotion. Orthodox Christians throughout the world have fashioned them into prayer ropes, bracelets, necklaces, and other devotional items to assist in the continual remembrance of God through the Jesus Prayer:

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."

Each seed possesses its own natural markings and coloration, making every piece unique. More than simply beautiful beads, the Tears of the Theotokos serve as a reminder of the love, compassion, and intercessions of the Mother of God, who continually guides the faithful toward her Son.
